Public health teams across Cheshire and Merseyside are being offered the opportunity to submit an expression of interest application to host a population health fellow for a year, on a secondment basis for two days per week.
Successful organisations will host the fellow from September 2023 until August 2024 and be responsible for recruiting the fellow, with support from Health Education England (HEE) and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID).
Organisations wishing to become a host should have an established track record of interest in, and senior commitment to, a population health approach. They must provide a project for the fellow to work on two days a week for a year, alongside the formal learning programme commissioned by HEE.
The project should be based on population health, with the aim of reducing health inequalities, and designed in way to make it educational for the fellow. Details on the educational objectives of the fellowship are outlined here.
This is an exciting opportunity to secure a dedicated member of staff to deliver a public health project that addresses locally identified public health priorities and develop public health leadership skills across professions and settings in the Cheshire and Merseyside.
This is the fourth year that HEE have run this programme and HEE will provide up to £30k per fellowship towards salary costs, which go to the fellows’ substantive employer.
This is initially a small-scale development opportunity, once successfully embedded, HEE would like to expand the fellowship scheme as it grows and matures in order to develop a network of multi professional public health leaders across the North West.
Key Points:
- The fellowship is open to healthcare professionals from a broad range of clinical backgrounds. HEE want to attract early to mid-career fully registered (and, where appropriate, licensed) healthcare professionals providing NHS services (AfC band 6 and above, or equivalent; dentists-in-training; doctors-in-training post- FY2, and their SAS equivalent).
- The population health and prevention approach is a key element in the NHS Long Term Plan and embedding population health capacity and capability in the workforce is a key deliverable for HEE.
- Population Health is an approach aimed at improving the health of an entire population. It is about improving the physical and mental health outcomes and wellbeing of people, while reducing health inequalities within and across a defined population.

HEE are looking to recruit a population health fellow in each of the North West ICS footprints. In the event that HEE receive more than one offer to host in each area then an internal selection process will be undertaken. The successful host organisations will be notified by 18th January at the latest.
