Local Spotlight: Cheshire and Warrington conference talks Building Back Better

Dr Matt Tyrer, Director of Public Health for Cheshire East, was invited to join the panel of the Cheshire and Warrington conference, held on Friday 5th November.

The annual conference, organised by the Cheshire and Warrington Sub-Regional Leaders Board, is an opportunity for Cheshire and Warrington’s key stakeholders to come together to discuss important and pressing matters, examine opportunities for closer and joint working, and celebrate some of the achievements that have resulted in better outcomes for local people.

The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Recovering from COVID… stronger!’, and sought to renew the energy and passion for collaborative working to ensure that no one is left behind, as local places recover from the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As well as sitting on the panel, Matt delivered a presentation from the perspective of Cheshire East entitled: ‘Learning from our response to Covid and building back fairer’. The aim of the presentation was to tell the story of the area’s COVID-19 journey and draw on local peoples’ and partner experiences to identify good practice, examples of collaboration and what can be learned for the future.

Speaking about his appearance at the conference, Matt said:

“To be a Director of Public Health during a one-in-a-lifetime global pandemic was challenging to say the least, but I am proud of our approach and how we have worked together, not only within Cheshire East, but across Cheshire and Warrington and the sub-region. All of the teams and organisations working hard throughout the pandemic have learned so much that can hugely benefit both our area, as well as colleagues in other areas in moving towards a strong recovery.

“I was thrilled to be asked to attend the Cheshire and Warrington conference to present some of this learning and I’m delighted that we have so many examples of close working and collaboration to draw upon. As we move forward and seek to recover from COVID-19 stronger than ever, I am confident that these experiences and lessons will not be lost, and that the energy and passion in our health and care system to do even better for our people is just as prominent as ever.”

Thara Raj, Director of Public Health for Warrington, was also at the conference:

Other guest appearances at the conference included members of Professor Sir Michael Marmot’s team from the Institute of Health Equity. The team provided an overview of Cheshire and Merseyside’s Marmot Community Programme and provided an overview of some of opportunities within Cheshire and Warrington to utilise research and insight-led approaches to build back fairer.
