Cheshire and Merseyside is leading the way in calling on the Government to push forward the Tobacco and Vapes Bill and secure a smoke‑free generation, after receiving significant local media coverage.
Directors of Public Health and young people in the sub-region have been widely featured across major outlets – including BBC North West Tonight, ITV Granada Reports, Global Radio stations, and BBC Radio Merseyside – as they united to highlight the life‑saving impact the legislation could have for children born today.
The strong media interest follows the publication of a joint statement from the sub-regions 9 public health leaders and Director of Population Health for NHS Cheshire and Merseyside urging national leaders to stay committed to the Bill as it progresses through Parliament. The statement reinforces evidence that reducing smoking rates is one of the most effective ways to prevent illness, tackle health inequalities, and protect future generations from addiction.
Local public health leaders emphasised that the proposed measures – including raising the age of sale year-on-year and tackling youth vaping – would have a transformative effect on communities across the region. Their clear and collective message has now gained powerful public visibility, helping raise awareness of the importance of the Bill at a crucial moment.
