Daniel Crabtree, is a Research Fellow with the NIHR-funded Health Determinants Research Collaboration Aberdeen, hosted by Aberdeen City Council. His previous roles have included Research Impact Officer with the University of Aberdeen and Research Fellow with the University of the Highlands and Islands. He lives in the Highlands and has developed an interest in understanding and supporting the local food system.

In 2023, they explored older adults lived experience of the food environment in a remote rural county in the Highlands. They also sought the views of healthcare professionals in the Scottish Highlands and Na h-Eileanan Siar/Western Isles. They found that barriers to the food security of older adults living in remote rural areas included high food prices, limited food choice, transport challenges, disruption to long food supply chains, and social isolation. Yet strong community networks – such as lunch clubs, local hubs, and shared online shopping – help improve food access and social connection.

The Rural Health Equity Chat is an cross-sectoral online community which brings together people interested in the health and wellbeing or rural, remote and coastal areas. Everyone is welcome to join the discussion.
