Healthier Futures at the University of Manchester are delighted to welcome Professor Clare Bambra, one of the UK’s foremost experts on public health and social determinants of health, for the Healthier Futures Annual Lecture 2025.

Drawing upon her acclaimed book, ‘Getting Better: The Policy and Politics of Reducing Health Inequalities’, Professor Bambra will address the urgent and growing crisis of social inequalities in health. By examining powerful historical case studies from around the world—including the US Great Society, German reunification, and democratisation in Brazil—she will document how population-level reductions in health inequalities have been achieved. These success stories highlight four common ‘levelling’ mechanisms crucial for progress: Welfare state expansion, Improved healthcare access, Reduced income inequalities, Enhanced democratic engagement.

Professor Bambra will also reflect on the converse: what happens when social safety nets are dismantled, and inequality increases. Her findings provide vital lessons about the political will and the macro-level policy action required to reduce health inequalities in the future.
