In the fourth webinar of this Health Equity Network series, the NIHR Policy Research Unit in Dementia & Neurodegeneration (DeNPRU Exeter) shares key insights from research into reducing inequalities for minority ethnic communities affected by dementia, Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, and Huntington’s disease.

The UK is home to diverse ethnic and cultural groups, yet people from minority ethnic backgrounds often face significant barriers in accessing healthcare for neurodegenerative conditions. These challenges can lead to delayed diagnoses, poorer health outcomes, and reduced quality of life.

As part of the research, the DeNPRU Exeter Reducing Ethnic Inequalities Project Team have:

  • Reviewed existing studies on the barriers and facilitators shaping access to care.
  • Examined community initiatives aimed at raising awareness and reducing stigma.
  • Engaged with people with lived and professional experience to explore solutions for improving healthcare access.

Speakers:

  • Professor Jan Oyebode – Deputy Director, DeNPRU Exeter
  • Dr Maria Caulfield – Research Fellow, DeNPRU Exeter
