On International Men’s Day (Wednesday 19th November 2025), The Department of Health and Social Care published the first ever Men’s Health Strategy. This includes activity on mental health, suicide prevention and gambling harms.
The document sets out the government’s 10-year strategy for men’s health and details the actions that are being taken to improve health and wellbeing of all men and boys in England.
From the strategy, The North West Office for Health Improvement and Disparities highlighted some key headlines and commitments for the region, including and investment of £3.6m over 3 years into community-based men’s health programmes:
Headlines
- Invest £3.6m over 3 years into community-based men’s health programmes, designed to reach those most at risk and least likely to engage with traditional services (more details to follow shortly)
- Launch a 3 year collaboration with the Premier League to improve men’s health literacy and engagement, particularly around mental health and suicide prevention (building on and expanding the Together Against Suicide campaign)
Additional commitments
- Distribute funding via the prevention levy to VCSE, NHS and local authorities to prevent and reduce gambling harms
- Implement the Keep Britain Working Review recommendation to pilot ways to support men’s mental health and keep people in work
- Explore options through the EUROS 2028 Legacy and Impact programme to fund additional work to support mental health and social connection for men
- Invest over £300,000 to help Rugby League Cares better understand how to reach and engage boys and young men at risk of loneliness
- Improve evidence on men’s mental health through NIHR’s Public health Research Programme (PHR), including strengthen evidence on mental health of fathers during perinatal period
