Cheshire East becomes the first authority in the North West to improve its Active Travel rating

Cheshire East Council has become the first authority in the North West to improve its Active Travel England capability rating in 2025, moving from Level 1 to Level 2.

A big part of this success comes from the new Southern Gateway scheme in Crewe, which is already transforming access to the town centre and railway station, promoting walking, wheeling and cycling.

The improved rating has unlocked a much‑needed increase in funding over the next four years (£6.5 million), enabling further investment in safe, accessible and greener active travel options across the borough. This funding will help Cheshire East progress toward higher capability levels and deliver the priority routes set out in its Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs).

Active Travel England praised the council’s strong submission and the commitment of officers working to enhance local active travel provision, even in challenging circumstances.

Promoting active travel across the region not only helps create cleaner air and a healthier planet, it also plays an important role in improving people’s physical and mental well-being. Regular movement is essential for good health, and meeting the UK recommended exercise guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. It also supports mental health by easing stress, anxiety, and depression, contributing to a better overall quality of life.

Active travel, whether walking, cycling, or wheeling, builds movement naturally into daily routines and offers an accessible and sustainable way for individuals to reach these recommended guidelines and enjoy the benefits that come with them.

Professor Rod Thomson, Interim Director of Population Health for Cheshire East Council, said:

“I am extremely proud of Cheshire East’s latest achievement.”

“To be the only authority in the North West to improve its Active Travel capability rating, resulting in increased investment, is impressive and shows the hard work and dedication of all the officers driving this important work forward.”

“Accessible active travel routes remain a priority, and with the increased investment, Cheshire East is accelerating towards a healthier, more connected future.”
