The Wirral Maternity Advice Service established a ground breaking health justice partnership resulting from a collaboration that embeds legal help in healthcare services and teams. For this pilot, Maternity Action set up a dedicated Maternity Rights Advice Service for women receiving their maternity care at Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital. They’ve been working with the midwifery team to establish the service and promote it to women and families using the maternity service and undertaking an extensive evaluation.
The advice services are staffed by a team of in-house employment lawyers who have expert knowledge of maternity rights at work and maternity benefits. The Wirral service is being developed by a dedicated solicitor who will provide free and confidential advice on a range of issues. Areas that the service can advise on include employment rights during pregnancy, maternity pay and benefits, maternity leave, health and safety issues and flexible working requests.
