Yesterday (October 24th 2024) DEFRA confirmed that the sale and supply of single-use vapes will be banned in England from 1st June 2025.
This move was widely welcomed by health, waste and enforcement organisations, who have repeatedly raised concerns about the environmental impact of these products and their links to the increase in teen vaping. This includes Cheshire and Merseyside Directors of Public Health, who called for a ban back in July 2023 and have continued to push for this measure.
Speaking on the ban, Dr Sarah McNulty, Lead Director of Public Health for Smokefree Cheshire and Merseyside said:
“The Cheshire and Merseyside Directors of Public and Population Health called for a ban on disposable vapes in July 2023, so this government action to bring the ban into force is welcome.”
“With an estimated 5 million disposable vapes being thrown away every single week in the UK, the environmental impact alone make this an important intervention. However, we need to see more if we are to curb the rise of popularity in vapes among young people and young adults who don’t smoke.”
“The Tobacco and Vapes Bill includes branding and product regulations to target vapes, so it is critical that this legislation is also passed as quickly as possible.”
